Organization Narrative

Head Injury Community Services (HICS) is funded by Brain Injury and Specialized Community Services Department (BISSCS) of the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission. It is administered by   Neuro-Rehhab Management, Inc.

Eligibility/Criteria/Enrollment:

  • Adult 22 years and older
  • Continent of bowel and bladder
  • Able to feed and toilet independently (or accompanied by personal care attendant)
  • Willing to participate in services
  • Have active goals for ISP or specific case-management goals
  • Not be a threat to other participants in the program

A referral is reviewed and an initial intake-meeting is scheduled. Then an assessment schedule is established. If the consumer is accepted in the HICS program, an Individual Service Plan (ISP) is developed with goals addressing the areas of need for the consumer.

HICS Recreation Program Eligibility Criteria:

  • at least 18 years old
  • have a brain injury
  • qualify though an application and interview process.
  • have transportation to and from the program
  • able to pay or contribute to his/her own cost for recreation program events
  • be independent in self care or have a personal care attendant who attends events with them to assist them.
  • have no severe medical or behavioral issues
  • able to tolerate group situations
  • able to endure two- to four-hour activities in-house or in the community
  • express an interest in participating in group leisure/recreational activities
  • able to independently manage money while in the community.

Services

The client, family, outside service providers, BISSCS and HICS staff develop individual service plans to support and to assist the consumer in attaining lifelong goals.

Groups are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They encompass various life skills and/or critical work behaviors.

On the days that groups are not held, some consumers are seen in their homes or home communities.

The Head Injury Community Services Recreation Program is designed to provide social and recreational opportunities for individuals with traumatic brain injury. Activities offered: mini-golf, dinner out, billiards, dances, movies, potluck dinners, museums and concerts.

Fees

It costs nothing to join the Recreation Program, but you have to pay your own way to events. Some events are free.
