Organization Narrative

Established, in 1975, Center for Living & Working, CLW is a nonprofit (C) (3) independent living center located in Worcester, Massachusetts. CLW’s service area covers sixty-three inner city and rural towns in Central, Massachusetts. CLW encompasses the independent living philosophy which states that individuals with disabilities whould have the same civil rights, options, and control over choices in their own lives as do persons without disabilities.  CLW’s innovative programs and services support independence as a fundamental factor of the social fabric of society. Since CLW’s inception, the primary mission has remained unchanged, though programs and services have constantly evolved and improved to meet the changing needs of the individuals we serve.

At CLW, independent living means encouraging people with disabilities to take full control of their lives by: learning daily living skills; learning to live in their own apartments; advocating on their own behalf against discrimination; managing their personal needs by hiring and training their own personal care attendants; arranging their own transportation; and having happier; more fulfilling lives.
