Asperger’s Syndrome
Asperger’s syndrome was first identified in 1944 by Austrian psychiatrist Hans Asperger. Asperger’s syndrome is usually not recognized until the third year of life and often later. It is characterized by a significant impairment in the ability to have social relationships. Much of the literature says children/people with Asperger’s syndrome are socially isolated and can not modify their social behavior to the demands of the environment. Children with Asperger’s syndrome frequently do form social responses to their parents and show some interaction with peers. They may develop symbolic play, though it is often repetitive and may evolve into severe preoccupation later in life. Some children experience extreme social rejection from peers as a result of their behavior, while others are thought to be “eccentric”. Asperger’s syndrome is thought to be associated with normal IQ, and it affects more boys than girls. There is evidence that, as their language improves, these children show significant improvement in their social behavior.
